Healthy Housing

California Breathing supports access to healthy housing for people with asthma and for all those living in California. We provide leadership, supply data and facilitate sharing of resources among diverse healthy housing stakeholders from the non-profit, governmental, and business sectors.

Since 2008, California Breathing’s housing program has:

  • Sponsored a state wide symposium on healthy housing that drew over 200 participants
  • Provided funding and technical assistance to community-based organizations and local government agencies to
    • Promote the use of Integrated Pest Management in non-profit multi-unit housing developments. Institute non-smoking policies for shared areas in senior mobile home parks.
    • Train code enforcement officers on healthy housing principles and approaches to dampness and mold.
    • Advocate for incorporation of health considerations in the housing element of a city’s General Plan
    • Conduct a survey on housing-related health issues affecting Native Americans in CaliforniaTeamed up with the Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Branch (CLPPB) and others at the CA Department of Public Health to:
  • Teamed up with the Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Branch and other CDPH program to:
    • Train code enforcement professionals and environmental health specialists state-wide to use healthy housing principles when inspecting properties and issuing citations
    • Develop and support partnerships to pursue a state wide healthy housing  agenda;
    • Develop indicators that can be used to describe the health of housing in California
