About Asthma Partners Strategic Plan | | | HISTORY OF THE STRATEGIC PLAN Asthma is a complex disease that needs a broad range of experts to work together to reduce its burden on the people of California. This includes public health professionals, health care providers, professional organizations, health organizations, ethnic organizations, school organizations, environmental organizations, researchers, local leaders, and people with asthma and their families. The California Department of Health Services (CDHS) sponsored the development of the original 2002 Strategic Plan (Plan) for Asthma in California, in partnership with a multidisciplinary group of stakeholders throughout California. The purpose of the Plan was to set a direction for asthma reduction strategies and help make a difference in people's lives who have asthma. Five years have passed and many stakeholders expressed an interest in revising and updating the Plan. Reflecting on collective experiences with using the 2002 Plan, stakeholders expressed common views that by incorporating current knowledge, research, and statistics about asthma; promoting interventions that have been demonstrated to be effective; and sharing program experience and materials developed in different regions of the state, a new plan could become the benchmark to inform statewide asthma-related interventions, funding, and policy making. Finally, California wanted to join the other states and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in promoting the continued use of state-level strategic planning to achieve greater coordination among partners and thus greater reduction in the social and economic burden of asthma. The Strategic Plan for Asthma in California 2008-2012, click here, was developed collaboratively by over 200 stakeholders including government agencies, asthma experts, medical care providers, community groups, and others. The Plan was coordinated and written by a California Department of Public Health Steering Committee and consultants. A companion document produced by California Breathing Epidemiologists, The Burden of Asthma in California: A Surveillance Report was released June 2007, click here. The production of both documents was supported by grant number U59/CCU922471-01-2 from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
