Clinical Management of Asthma High quality asthma care included accurated diagnosis and evaluation, appropriate treatment, effective patient education on prevention and self-management, and regular clinical follow up. Since 1991, the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP) has provided clinical guidelines and updates on the appropriate diagnosis and management of asthma. The NAEPP Expert Panel 3 recently completed an update to the Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma. While most healthcare providers are aware of these national standards, many indivuals with asthma do not receive all of the recommended healthcare components. There have been many successful clinical and community interventions that have overcome some of the barries to quality healthcare for people with asthma. These inteventions include the use of the Chronic Care Model, case coordination and case management. The California Asthma Public Health Initiative (CAPHI) is another program of the California Department of Public Health working to address asthma. CAPHI has provided leadership, funding and training to clinics throughout the state. For more information about CAPHI, visit their website at www.betterasthmacare.org
